Create an emergency preparedness plan.
“Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.” — Proverb
Life has a way of throwing curveballs when we least expect them. A sudden storm, a power outage, even something as simple as your phone dying when you really need it — it’s never fun, but it doesn’t have to catch you off guard.
An emergency preparedness plan isn’t about being scared. It’s about giving yourself (and your loved ones) peace of mind. Here’s how to make yours — simple, quick, and doable for any household.
Step 1: Know What You’re Up Against
Every area has its own risks — storms, floods, earthquakes, wildfires. Take a few minutes to figure out what’s most likely in your neighborhood so you can plan smart.
Step 2: Keep Everyone Connected
When things get hectic, communication is everything.
Create a family contact list (and keep a copy in your wallet). Pick an out-of-town person to be the “check-in” contact. Decide on a safe meeting spot if you’re separated.
Step 3: Build Your Just-in-Case Kit
Think of this as your “comfort in a bag.” Include:
Water (1 gallon per person per day for at least 3 days). Easy, no-cook food for 3 days. Flashlight + extra batteries. First-aid kit, medications, important papers.
Step 4: Map Your Exit Routes
Know at least two ways out of your home and your neighborhood. Keep a paper map handy in case GPS is down.
Step 5: Remember Special Needs
Kids, elderly family members, pets — make sure their essentials are in your plan too.
Step 6: Practice, Don’t Just Plan
Twice a year, do a quick “what if” drill with your family. Update your kit and contact info while you’re at it.
At the end of the day, an emergency plan is like a seatbelt — you hope you never need it, but you’ll be glad it’s there.
