There was a time in my life when the closest store wasn’t just “down the street.”
It was 1.8 miles away… down a long country road, full of hills that didn’t care how tired you already were.
And I didn’t have the luxury of taking my time.
I had a deadline.
I had kids getting off the bus soon.
And I had to make it there and back before they got home.
It was one of those days where the heat wrapped around you like it had something to prove. Every step felt heavier than the last. Every hill looked taller the closer I got.
At one point, I remember thinking,
“There’s no way I’m going to make this.”
But I didn’t stop.
Instead, I changed how I looked at it.
I stopped focusing on the whole 1.8 miles…
and started focusing on what was right in front of me.
A tree.
A mailbox.
A crack in the road.
I told myself, “Just make it to that.”
And when I did… I let myself breathe. Just for a moment.
Then I picked the next spot.
And the next.
And the next.
Before I even realized it, I had made it to the store.
And somehow… I made it back too.
That day taught me something I didn’t fully understand at the time, but I carry with me now more than ever:
Big goals can feel overwhelming.
Life can feel overwhelming.
But when you break it down into smaller, reachable pieces… it becomes possible.
Step by step.
Moment by moment.
Goal by goal.
And maybe the most important part of all…
There’s not always going to be someone there cheering you on.
Sometimes… it’s just you.
And in those moments, you have to become your own voice.
Your own push.
Your own reminder that you can keep going.
Because you can.
You always could.
You just have to take that first step… and then the next one after that.
